Overview

This is the safari I suggest when someone says, ‘I do not have many days, but I still want Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro.’ It is short, active and very rewarding. I will not pretend it is restful.

AngelWarriors of Africa Safari, Arusha

This 4-Day Classic Tanzania Safari is the short version of the northern circuit: Tarangire, Central Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, connected by road, in four days. It exists for travellers who want the famous names and do not have a fortnight to give them.

It suits first-time safari travellers, couples, friends, solo travellers and small groups, and it works well either side of a Zanzibar week. Tarangire gives you elephants and baobabs, the Serengeti gives you big cats and open plains, and Ngorongoro gives you a crater floor with a remarkable amount of wildlife in a small, enclosed space.

Because it is short, it is active. Expect early starts, scenic drives and full days rather than slow mornings by the pool. The trade is deliberate: you spend the time on game drives and on the road between parks instead of settling into one lodge.

The price starts at $1,899 per person, based on the accommodation plan below. What you actually pay depends on your travel dates, how many of you there are, how the rooms are arranged, availability, park fees and anything you change.

Where the trip goes

A loop out of Arusha and back. Tarangire on the first day, the long drive west into the Serengeti on the second, and the crater on the way home. Nothing doubles back, which is what lets four days cover three parks.

  1. ArushaDay 1 · Day 4

Start and finish. Pickup from your hotel or an agreed point, and the drop-off on Day 4.

  2. TarangireDay 1

Elephants, baobabs and the Tarangire River. Overnight in the Karatu area, on the way to the crater.

  3. Central SerengetiDays 2–3

Big-cat country: open plains, river valleys and the kopjes lions rest on. One night in the park.

  4. NgorongoroDays 3–4

A tented night on the conservation area, then the crater descent on the final morning.

Itinerary detail
  1. Day 1

    Arusha to Tarangire National Park

    Meals
    Full Board

After breakfast or a morning pickup in Arusha, you meet your driver-guide and set off toward Tarangire National Park. This is the first wildlife chapter of the trip and a good introduction to the northern circuit.

Tarangire is known for its elephant herds, ancient baobabs, open woodland, seasonal swamps and the river that gives the park its name. In the dry season that river becomes one of the few reliable water sources in the region, and the animals concentrate around it. You may see elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, antelope, lions and a great many birds.

You spend the day on a game drive inside the park, with a picnic lunch or an arranged meal depending on the plan for the day. Your guide picks the route from wildlife movement, the season and how much light is left.

After the game drive you continue to your lodge in the Karatu area for dinner and the night. Farm of Dreams Lodge is a comfortable first night and, more practically, it puts you in position for the long drive west the next morning.

  2. Day 2

    Karatu to Central Serengeti

    Meals
    Full Board

An early breakfast, then the drive toward Serengeti National Park. This is the longest travel day of the safari and also one of the most interesting, because the landscape changes as you go: highland farmland gives way to open country, and open country gives way to the plains.

Depending on the route and the timing, you may pass through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area on the way. As you enter the Serengeti the view opens out into grassland, kopjes and river valleys, and wildlife can appear at any point — so the transfer becomes part of the game viewing rather than an interruption to it.

Central Serengeti is the park's most dependable wildlife region. It is particularly good for big cats, with lions on the plains and near the kopjes, leopards in the riverine trees and cheetahs in the more open areas, alongside resident plains game.

You game-view your way to camp and settle in for the evening. A night at Serengeti Safari Haven Camp puts you inside the park, close enough to hear it after dark.

Day 2 is long. Do not fight it — bring a book for the highland stretch, then put it away once we pass the gate, because the Serengeti starts before the camp does.

  3. Day 3

Serengeti game drive, then on to Ngorongoro

    Meals
    Full Board

The day starts with a morning game drive in Central Serengeti. Early hours tend to be the best ones: predators may still be moving, the air is cool and the light is at its best for photography. Your guide works the areas where there has been recent activity.

The Serengeti is famous for its plains, but the central region also has river systems, rocky kopjes and patches of woodland, and that mix is what supports so many species. You might find lions resting against a kopje, a leopard in a tree along a watercourse, cheetahs out on the open ground, and hyenas, elephants, giraffes, buffalo and plains game throughout.

After the game drive you begin the journey toward the Ngorongoro area. The drive is a scenic one and gives you a last look at the Serengeti on the way out. You arrive at camp in time for dinner.

Ang’ata Ngorongoro Camp is your base for the crater the next morning. The evening is the time to charge camera batteries, find your warm layers and make peace with an early alarm.

  4. Day 4

Ngorongoro Crater and the drive back to Arusha

    Stay
    No accommodation
    Meals
    Breakfast and lunch

After an early breakfast you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater. It is the most dramatic setting on the route: a collapsed volcanic caldera holding a great deal of wildlife inside a compact, enclosed floor.

That floor is a mix of grassland, swamp, forest and lake. You may see lions, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and elephants, and with luck a black rhino at distance. Because the crater walls contain it, the game viewing feels quite unlike the Serengeti's open horizons.

Lunch is a picnic or an arranged meal, depending on the day. Your guide watches the clock carefully here: the crater's access and departure times are set by the conservation authority and have to be respected.

After the crater you begin the drive back toward Arusha, or to whichever drop-off point we have agreed. That is the end of your 4-Day Classic Tanzania Safari with Warriors of Africa Safari.

Where you’ll sleep

  1. Farm of Dreams Lodge

    Mid-range lodge · Karatu · Night 1

Your first night is in Karatu, after a full day in Tarangire: 48 rooms in flower gardens below the Ngorongoro highlands, each with an en-suite bathroom and a terrace, plus a pool, a restaurant and a lounge bar.

Karatu is where the northern circuit catches its breath. Staying here rather than back toward Arusha takes a couple of hours off the next morning's drive, which is the difference between arriving in the Serengeti with light to spare and arriving at dusk.

  2. Serengeti Safari Haven Camp

Tented camp · Central Serengeti · Night 2

The Serengeti night, inside the park at Seronera: a tented camp below a wooded hill, about 5 km from the airstrip, with en-suite tents, solar power, and a restaurant and bar in the main tent.

Sleeping in the park is the point. The morning game drive on Day 3 begins where the animals already are, instead of an hour's drive from them — and on a four-day route, that hour matters.

  3. Ang’ata Ngorongoro Camp

Crater-rim tented camp · Ngorongoro Crater rim, Ngorongoro Conservation Area · Night 3

A tented night on the crater rim itself: eight en-suite tents at the Nyati campsite on the south-eastern rim, near the Crater Lodge, with a lounge tent and a dining tent.

The crater opens and closes on a fixed schedule, so where you sleep the night before decides how much of the floor you get. Sleeping on the rim, just inside the park boundary, means an early descent rather than a long climb first.

The highlands are cold once the sun goes down. Keep a fleece somewhere you can reach it.

Useful tips

The days start early
A four-day route covering three parks only works if the mornings are used. Expect breakfast before sunrise more than once, and plan to sleep on the drives rather than through the game drives.
Pack for two climates
The Ngorongoro rim sits above 2,200m and is genuinely cold after dark, while the crater floor and Tarangire are hot by mid-morning. Layers beat a single warm coat.
The crater runs on a clock
Descent and departure windows in the crater are fixed by the conservation authority, not by us. Your guide plans the morning around them, which is why the last day starts early.
Dust gets everywhere
This is a dry-country road safari. A scarf or buff, and a bag for your camera between sightings, are worth more than they weigh.
Tips aren’t included
Gratuities for your driver-guide and lodge staff aren’t part of the price, so set a little aside for them.
Bring insurance details
Travel insurance isn’t included. Keep your policy details with you, printed and on your phone.
Keep printed copies
Phones run flat and signal is patchy in the parks. A printed itinerary, visa approval and insurance details help at every gate and check-in.
Ask your doctor about malaria
Discuss malaria prevention with your doctor before you travel, and bring insect repellent for the evenings.

When to go

This route runs year-round, because all three parks hold wildlife in every season. The dry months are generally easier for game viewing — animals gather at water and the grass is short — while the green season brings dramatic skies, fewer vehicles in some areas and much better photography.

Being a short itinerary, it does not depend on one seasonal event. The Serengeti section gives strong general wildlife potential whenever you come, and the Ngorongoro Crater is about as reliable as wildlife viewing gets in northern Tanzania.

What the season does affect is availability. Four days across three parks means every night is booked in a different place, so the peak months and the holiday weeks fill early. If your dates are fixed, tell us sooner rather than later.

Questions guests ask

Is four days enough for Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro?

It is enough to see all three, and that is the point of the route. It is not enough to be slow about it: expect early starts, full days and a good deal of driving between parks. If you would rather linger, a 5-day or 7-day itinerary gives each park more room.

How much driving is there?

This is a road safari, so the distances are real. Day 2, from the Karatu area to Central Serengeti, is the longest stretch and can take most of the day with game viewing along the way. Your guide breaks it up and the drive itself is often full of wildlife.

Will I see the Great Migration?

Possibly, depending on the month and where the herds are. This route spends its Serengeti time in the central area, so it is not built around river crossings. If the migration is your reason for travelling, tell us your dates and we will say honestly whether this route suits them.

Will I see a black rhino in the crater?

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the better places in Tanzania to look for black rhino, but the population is small and sightings are usually distant. Treat it as a hope rather than a promise; lions, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippo and hyena are far more likely.

Can this safari start or end somewhere other than Arusha?

Yes. Arusha is the usual start and finish, and we can also collect you from Kilimanjaro Airport or an agreed pickup point. Tell us where you are coming from and we will build the transfers into your quote.

Can I add Zanzibar afterwards?

Yes, and many guests do. A short flight connects Arusha or Kilimanjaro with Zanzibar, so the safari and a beach week fit together neatly. We arrange the connecting flight and the Zanzibar nights as part of the same plan.

Can the lodges be upgraded?

Yes. The three properties on this itinerary are mid-range, and each night can be moved up a category subject to availability. We will quote the difference before you commit to anything.

Is this safari suitable for children?

It suits older children who cope well with early starts and long drives. For younger children we usually suggest a slower route with fewer transfers and more time in one place.
