5-Day Rubondo Island Lake Victoria Safari
Forest, birds, boats and quiet coves on a protected island in Lake Victoria
Overview
Rubondo is not trying to be Serengeti. Its beauty is softer: water, birds, forest, quiet coves and a feeling of being hidden inside Lake Victoria.
This 5-Day Rubondo Island Lake Victoria Safari is a quiet, unusual journey for travellers who want something gentle and far from the classic safari route. Instead of savannah game drives, it is about Lake Victoria scenery, island forest, boat safaris, birdlife, wetlands, forest walks and time by the water.
Rubondo Island National Park lies in the south-west of Lake Victoria. The main island is about 28 km long and still around 80% forest: lowland evergreen forest, papyrus swamps and sandy coves, home to hippos, crocodiles, sitatunga, bushbuck, a wealth of waterbirds and a chimpanzee population with an ongoing conservation programme.
It is not a big-cat checklist safari, and we won't sell it as one. Rubondo suits birders, photographers, repeat travellers, soft-adventure guests and couples who value privacy, lake scenery and low-impact nature.
The price starts at $3,850 per person sharing, built on simpler accommodation: a Mwanza hotel and the park's own bandas. Staying at Rubondo Island Camp, as shown below, sits at the premium level, from about $5,250. We confirm flights, transfers, park fees and activities before we quote.

Day by day
Day 1
To Lake Victoria and across to Rubondo
Your journey begins with travel to Lake Victoria. The simplest version starts in Mwanza; from Dar es Salaam or Arusha you connect by air to Mwanza first. The final routing follows the flight schedules, road timing, lake conditions and transfer arrangements for your dates.
Rubondo is not a roadside destination. The usual way in is by road to a mainland landing such as Nkome or Kasenda, then by boat to the island; a charter flight can land on the island airstrip by prior arrangement. So the first day is planned with realistic timing and no tight promises.
If the timing doesn't allow a same-day crossing, we plan a night near Mwanza and cross the following morning, rather than rushing the lake.
Once on the island, you settle in at Rubondo Island Camp and get your first feel for Lake Victoria's island wilderness, with a relaxed dinner and a briefing on the days ahead.
Day 2
Boat safari and island orientation
After breakfast you start exploring the island. A boat safari along the shoreline, papyrus bays and sandy coves can bring hippos, crocodiles, fish eagles, herons, kingfishers and other waterbirds.
Rubondo's wildlife experience is slower and more intimate than a game drive. Instead of chasing sightings across plains, you watch lake edges, forest margins and wetlands, which makes it especially rewarding for birders and photographers who enjoy detail.
A guided nature walk may follow, depending on the weather and park arrangements. Forest trails can reveal bushbuck, vervet monkeys, tracks, butterflies and forest birds.
Back at camp there is lunch and time to rest, with a short boat outing, photography or the beach in the afternoon. The day should feel peaceful rather than packed.
Day 3
Birding, wetlands and the lake
Today is about Rubondo's birds, wetlands and shoreline. The island's birdlife runs from fish eagles, herons and kingfishers to forest species, and sitatunga live in the papyrus-lined inlets alongside hippos and Nile crocodiles.
The plan follows the lake and local guidance: calm bays by boat, birding spots, a guided walk, or time photographing the lake and forest. Early morning and late afternoon bring the softest light and the most activity.
Rubondo is also known for its chimpanzee conservation programme. We only include a chimpanzee activity if it is officially available, safely arranged and permitted for your dates.
The afternoon stays flexible. A slower pace suits the island: water, forest, birds, silence and space.
Day 4
Forest trails, photography and island time
Your last full day gives the trip depth. Choose a morning forest walk, a boat safari, more birding, a photography session or simply time by the lake.
For couples it can feel like a private island escape; for birders and photographers it is another chance at species, behaviour and light; and after dry savannah parks it is a refreshing contrast.
Fishing, kayaking, specialist birding, the chimpanzee habituation trek or private boat use are added only once current rules, costs and availability are confirmed. The lake and the park rules always guide the plan.
Enjoy a final dinner on the island, a peaceful last evening in one of Tanzania's least-visited protected areas.
Day 5
Rubondo to Mwanza, Dar es Salaam or Arusha
After breakfast you leave the island by boat to the mainland landing, then continue by road to Mwanza for your onward flight to Dar es Salaam, Arusha or elsewhere.
Lake and flight logistics can be sensitive, so avoid a tight international connection unless the confirmed schedule leaves a safe buffer. A night in Mwanza or Dar es Salaam is easy to add.
That is the end of your 5-Day Rubondo Island Lake Victoria Safari with Warriors of Africa Safari. From here you can fly home, continue to the Serengeti, Katavi or Mahale, or finish on Zanzibar or Mafia Island.
Where you’ll sleep
Rubondo Island Camp
The only tourist camp on the island: eight cottages on the forest edge above a beach, with a pool, and hippos grazing around camp after dark. Boat trips, forest walks and birding start from the door.
This is the premium way to do Rubondo. The starting price is built on simpler accommodation, a Mwanza hotel and the park's own bandas, for birders and travellers on a tighter budget.
Accommodation is confirmed against availability, transfer timing, season and budget before the final quote.

Useful tips
- Pack soft and light
- Small aircraft and boat transfers both work best with soft-sided bags. We confirm luggage limits with your flights.
- The lake sets the timing
- Boat crossings and outings depend on lake conditions. June to October is usually the most predictable; we keep the first day flexible rather than promise a fixed crossing time.
- Bring binoculars
- Rubondo is a birding island. Binoculars, and a long lens if you have one, make far more difference here than on a game drive.
- Chimpanzees only if confirmed
- The chimpanzee habituation trek is run with the park when conditions allow, needs its own permit and has a minimum age of 12. We include it only once it is confirmed for your dates.
- Leave a buffer at the end
- Lake and flight logistics can shift. Avoid a tight international connection on Day 5; a night in Mwanza or Dar es Salaam is the safe buffer.
- Tips aren't included
- Gratuities for guides, boat crew, rangers and lodge staff aren't part of the price, so set a little aside for them.
- Bring insurance details
- Travel insurance isn't included. Keep your policy details with you, printed and on your phone.
- Ask your doctor about malaria
- Discuss malaria prevention with your doctor before you travel, and bring insect repellent for the forest and the evenings by the lake.

When to go
June to October is the strongest general window. It is the drier period, lake conditions are usually more predictable, and logistics are easier to plan.
November to March is greener and quieter, with good birding; it suits flexible travellers, and we confirm lake and transfer conditions first.
April and May are the wettest months, when lake access and activities can be affected and Rubondo Island Camp is closed.
Questions guests ask
Is Rubondo Island worth visiting?
Yes, if you enjoy birds, lake scenery, forest trails, boat safaris and quiet nature. It is not the right choice if you mainly want big cats and classic game drives.
Where is Rubondo Island National Park?
In the south-west of Lake Victoria, in Tanzania's Geita Region, about 150 km west of Mwanza. Access is usually arranged through Mwanza and a mainland boat landing.
How do I get to Rubondo?
Usually by road and boat from the mainland, via Mwanza; charter flights can land on the island airstrip by prior arrangement. We confirm the exact routing before you book.
Can I see chimpanzees on Rubondo?
Rubondo has a chimpanzee population descended from animals released in the 1960s, and an ongoing habituation programme. A chimpanzee activity is only included if it is officially available and permitted for your dates; it needs a separate park permit and has a minimum age of 12.
What wildlife can I see?
Possible sightings include hippos, crocodiles, sitatunga, bushbuck, vervet monkeys, otters, fish eagles and many other water and forest birds. Wildlife is natural and sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Is Rubondo a luxury safari?
It can be planned at a premium level at Rubondo Island Camp, but the island's real value is remoteness, lake scenery and nature rather than mainstream luxury.
When is the best time to visit Rubondo?
June to October, when lake conditions are usually more predictable. Other months can suit flexible travellers and birders; the camp closes in April and May.
Can Rubondo combine with the Serengeti?
Yes. Rubondo works as a Lake Victoria extension after the Serengeti, depending on the flight and road connections for your dates.
What should I pack?
Pack light in soft-sided luggage, and bring sun protection, insect repellent, binoculars, a camera, comfortable walking shoes, a light rain layer and any personal medication.
