Overview

This is the Southern Circuit package I would sell as the beautiful bridge between serious wilderness and soft beach luxury. Nyerere and Ruaha give the adventure; Zanzibar gives the exhale.

AngelWarriors of Africa Safari, Arusha

This 10-Day Nyerere, Ruaha and Zanzibar Safari is a complete Southern Tanzania safari and beach journey. It joins two of the south's strongest wilderness parks with a soft island finish, for travellers who want quiet parks, few crowds and time to relax after the bush.

It starts in Dar es Salaam and flies to Nyerere, for river scenery, woodland, floodplain, game drives and a boat safari on the Rufiji. From there it flies on to Ruaha, a remote, powerful wilderness of baobabs, elephants and predators.

After six nights on safari, the trip finishes with three nights on Zanzibar. That balance matters: the south can feel wild and intense, and the beach gives you time to recover and end the journey in comfort.

The price starts at $6,250 per person sharing, based on Rufiji River Camp, Ruaha River Lodge and a bungalow at Zuri Zanzibar on half board, with scheduled flights. The luxury camps and a Zuri suite take it to about $8,900. We confirm flights, rooms and park fees before we quote.

Day by day

Itinerary detail
  1. Day 1

Dar es Salaam to Nyerere National Park

    Meals
Lunch and dinner, depending on flight timing

Your journey begins in Dar es Salaam, where a Warriors of Africa Safari representative meets you and helps you to the domestic terminal. A scheduled light aircraft then flies you south to Nyerere, so the safari starts in the wilderness instead of on the road.

The camp team meets you at the airstrip and drives you to Rufiji River Camp, on a bank of the Rufiji River. Depending on the flight, there is lunch, a rest and an afternoon game drive or a first look at the river.

Nyerere feels different from the Northern Circuit straight away: broad, river-shaped and wild, with woodland, lakes, channels and open floodplain.

Dinner is served at camp, looking over the water. The first evening is deliberately gentle, a chance to settle in before the full safari days ahead.

  2. Day 2

A full safari day in Nyerere

    Meals
    Full Board

After breakfast you set out on your first full day in Nyerere: a full-day game drive with a packed lunch, or a morning drive followed by an afternoon boat safari on the Rufiji.

Nyerere is known for its wide wilderness and its river. Possible sightings include elephant, giraffe, buffalo, antelope, zebra, hippo, crocodile, lion, hyena, wild dog and many birds, though nothing is ever guaranteed.

The boat safari is the signature experience here. Hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds and elephants at the water's edge look completely different from the water.

You return to Rufiji River Camp in the late afternoon for a rest, dinner and your second night in the Nyerere wilderness.

  3. Day 3

    Second day in Nyerere

    Meals
    Full Board

Another full day lets you see Nyerere properly. The park is huge, the wildlife moves with the season, and different habitats give very different sightings.

Your guide may follow productive routes or focus on the river, predators, elephants, birds or photography. If the boat safari wasn't on Day 2, it fits today; a guided walk can also be arranged.

If you prefer a slower pace, a split day with time back at camp works well; if you want more, a long day out with a packed lunch.

Your last night in Nyerere is quiet and unhurried before you move deeper into Southern Tanzania.

  4. Day 4

    Fly from Nyerere to Ruaha

    Meals
    Full Board

After breakfast you fly from Nyerere to Ruaha on a scheduled light aircraft. The flight is what makes this trip work: it replaces a very long drive with an hour or two in the air.

In Ruaha you are met and driven to Ruaha River Lodge, the park's first lodge, on the Great Ruaha River. Ruaha has a different personality from Nyerere: drier, more rugged, wider and full of atmosphere.

After lunch you head out on an afternoon game drive, into baobab country, along the river, among big elephant herds and lion prides, with very few other vehicles.

Dinner is at the lodge, with the river below your banda, on your first night in Ruaha.

  5. Day 5

    A full day in Ruaha

    Meals
    Full Board

Today is all Ruaha. Your guide plans the day around the season and the wildlife, usually with an early start while it is cool and the predators are active.

Possible sightings include elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, greater kudu, impala, lion, leopard, hyena, wild dog and many birds. The landscape is part of the show: baobabs, rocky hills, sand rivers and huge views.

Ruaha suits guests who value space over famous names. Even the quiet hours feel rewarding, because the park has such a strong presence.

You return to Ruaha River Lodge for dinner and a relaxed evening in the bush.

  6. Day 6

    Your last safari day

    Meals
    Full Board

A second full day in Ruaha deepens the safari. One day introduces the park; two let your guide explore other areas and follow fresh tracks.

The day can centre on big cats, elephants, photography, birds or a slower pace. A guided walk along the river can be added where the lodge and park rules allow, and only once it is confirmed and quoted.

It is the last safari day before Zanzibar, so there is no rush: a long drive with a packed lunch, or a morning and afternoon drive with a rest in between.

Your final safari dinner closes the wilderness chapter before the trip changes pace on the coast.

  7. Day 7

    Fly from Ruaha to Zanzibar

    Meals
Breakfast; dinner at Zuri on half board

After breakfast you fly from Ruaha to Zanzibar, usually connecting through Dar es Salaam, depending on the airline routing and the season. We confirm the schedule before the final quote.

In Zanzibar you are met and driven north to Zuri Zanzibar on Kendwa Beach, about an hour from the airport. After six nights on safari the island is soft and unhurried: settle in, walk on the beach, or take to the pool.

The contrast is the point. The safari brings wilderness and wildlife; Zanzibar brings warm water, white sand, spice, culture and coastal hospitality.

Dinner is at the resort on half board, ideally at the beach bar for Kendwa's sunset.

  8. Day 8

    A day on the beach

    Meals
    Breakfast and dinner (half board)

A full free day on Zanzibar. No early game drives, no airstrips and no safari dust: sleep in and take breakfast slowly.

If you want to do something, we can arrange a Stone Town visit, a spice farm tour, a sunset dhow cruise, snorkelling, diving or a marine trip, depending on the sea and the season. Zuri's own water-sports centre is on the beach.

For couples, it is a good day for the spa, a private dinner or simply the beach. Families can use the free kids' club for ages 4 to 12.

Don't overfill it. The beach days are there to recover after the wilderness.

  9. Day 9

Your last full day on Zanzibar

    Meals
    Breakfast and dinner (half board)

Your last full day is yours. Add a second excursion if you want one, or stay on the beach.

Stone Town brings history, food, architecture and Swahili coastal life; snorkelling or diving can be arranged when the conditions and operators allow.

Keep the evening gentle if you have an early flight tomorrow.

End with a relaxed dinner and a final night on the island.

  10. Day 10

    Departure from Zanzibar

    Where
    Zanzibar Airport
    Stay
    No accommodation
    Meals
    Breakfast

After breakfast you check out and transfer to Zanzibar's airport for your onward flight. Depending on the time, there may be a relaxed morning at the resort first.

That is the end of your 10-Day Nyerere, Ruaha and Zanzibar Safari with Warriors of Africa Safari.

Where you’ll sleep

  1. Rufiji River Camp

Classic tented camp · Rufiji River, Nyerere National Park · Nights 1–3

One of the first camps in the park, on a bank of the Rufiji River: tents under thatch with terraces facing the water, family suites with plunge pools, a pool, and a restaurant and bar over the river.

Game drives, boat safaris and guided walks all start from camp.

Useful tips

Pack soft and light
Light aircraft carry soft-sided bags only, within a strict weight limit. Beach clothes can travel light too; Zanzibar is relaxed.
The flights set the timings
Scheduled flights between Dar es Salaam, Nyerere, Ruaha and Zanzibar run at set times, sometimes with stops. Day 7 is mostly travel, and the beach waits.
Dress for heat and tsetse
The south is hot, especially from September. Neutral, breathable layers help, and avoid dark blue and black, which attract tsetse flies.
Cover up in town
Zanzibar is largely Muslim. Swimwear is fine at the resort, but cover shoulders and knees in Stone Town and the villages.
Book excursions with the tide
Snorkelling and dhow trips depend on the tides and the wind. We time any Zanzibar excursion around the sea, not the clock.
Tips aren't included
Gratuities for guides, boat crews, lodge and hotel staff aren't part of the price, so set a little aside for them.
Bring insurance details
Travel insurance isn't included. Keep your policy details with you, printed and on your phone.
Ask your doctor about malaria
Discuss malaria prevention with your doctor before you travel, and bring insect repellent for the safari evenings and the coast.

When to go

June to October is the strongest window: dry-season game viewing near water in both parks, and settled beach weather on Zanzibar.

January and February are warm and dry on the coast and work very well for couples and honeymooners.

November to March is greener on safari, with good birding and good value. April and May are the wettest months, when some camps and flights are affected.

Questions guests ask

Is this a fly-in safari?

Yes. Scheduled light aircraft connect Dar es Salaam, Nyerere and Ruaha, then fly you on to Zanzibar, usually via Dar es Salaam.

Why combine Nyerere, Ruaha and Zanzibar?

Nyerere gives river wilderness, Ruaha gives remote big-game country, and Zanzibar gives a relaxed beach finish after the safari.

How many nights are on safari?

Six: three in Nyerere and three in Ruaha, followed by three nights on Zanzibar.

Can we add more Zanzibar nights?

Yes. One or two more beach nights make the trip even more relaxed, especially for honeymooners.

Are safari activities private?

That depends on the lodge. Fly-in safaris usually use the lodge's shared activities unless you book a private vehicle, which we quote separately.

Can we include a boat safari?

Yes. Rufiji River Camp runs boat safaris on the river, and we plan one into your Nyerere days.

What luggage limit applies?

Light aircraft take soft-sided bags only, within a strict weight limit. We confirm the exact allowance for your flights; you can leave beach clothes in a separate bag in Dar es Salaam if needed.

Which Zanzibar beach is best after this safari?

We use Kendwa on the north-west coast, where the water is swimmable at most tides and the sunsets are superb. Nungwi, Matemwe or a quieter east-coast beach can suit other styles; tell us what you like.

Is this good for honeymooners?

Yes. It is one of the best Southern Circuit honeymoon formats: quiet wilderness first, then the beach.
