Overview

This is the Southern Circuit package I would sell to guests who want space, quiet and a more serious wilderness feeling. Nyerere gives the river story, Ruaha gives the wild heart.

AngelWarriors of Africa Safari, Arusha

This 7-Day Nyerere and Ruaha Fly-In Safari is our premium introduction to Southern Tanzania. Instead of long drives between parks, domestic flights connect Dar es Salaam, Nyerere and Ruaha, giving you more time in the wilderness and less on the road.

It joins two of the south's strongest safari landscapes. Nyerere brings the river: wide wilderness, game drives and a boat safari on the Rufiji system. Ruaha adds a deeper, more remote feeling, with huge landscapes, baobab-studded country, big elephant herds and predators.

It suits guests who have already seen the Northern Circuit, and anyone who wants a quieter, more exclusive safari from the start. It is also an easy fit for travellers arriving through Dar es Salaam, and pairs well with Zanzibar or Mafia Island afterwards.

The price starts at $4,750 per person sharing, based on Rufiji River Camp and Ruaha River Lodge, both run by Foxes Safari Camps, with scheduled flights and full board. The luxury camps below quote higher. We confirm flights, camp availability and park fees before we quote.

Day by day

Itinerary detail
  1. Day 1

Dar es Salaam to Nyerere National Park

    Meals
Lunch and dinner, depending on flight timing

Your Southern Tanzania safari begins in Dar es Salaam, where a Warriors of Africa Safari representative meets you and helps you to the domestic terminal. From there a scheduled light aircraft flies you south to Nyerere, so the first day starts in the wilderness instead of on the road.

The camp team meets you at the airstrip and drives you to Rufiji River Camp, on a bank of the Rufiji River. Depending on the flight, there is lunch, a rest and an afternoon game drive or a first look at the river.

Nyerere's appeal is its scale: river channels, lakes, woodland and open floodplain, shaped by the Rufiji system. After Dar es Salaam, the first day is about slowing down and settling into the safari rhythm.

Dinner is served at camp, looking over the river, with the sounds of hippos and the bush as the night comes in.

  2. Day 2

A full safari day in Nyerere

    Meals
    Full Board

After breakfast you set out on your first full day in Nyerere. Your guide plans it around the wildlife, the weather, the tracks and what you most want to see, with an early start while the morning is cool.

Game drives can bring elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, antelope, hippo, crocodile, lion, hyena and, with luck, wild dog, along with a wealth of birds. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the park's size and range of habitats make every drive different.

The day can be a full-day game drive with a packed lunch, or a morning drive followed by an afternoon boat safari on the Rufiji. The river trip is one of the great Southern Circuit experiences: hippos, crocodiles, elephants at the water's edge and birds everywhere, seen from the water.

You return to Rufiji River Camp in the late afternoon, with time for a shower before dinner under the stars.

  3. Day 3

    Second day in Nyerere

    Meals
    Full Board

A second full day lets you see Nyerere properly rather than as a quick stop. The park is vast, wildlife moves with the water and the season, and different areas feel very different.

Your guide may explore new routes, return to a productive area, or focus on what interests you most: predators, elephants, the river, birds or photography. If the boat safari wasn't on Day 2, it fits today; a guided walk can also be arranged.

Photographers get the soft morning and evening light on the river and woodland. If you prefer a slower pace, a split day with time back at camp between activities works well.

Your last night in Nyerere is calm and unhurried, a proper sense of the southern river wilderness before you fly on to Ruaha.

  4. Day 4

    Fly from Nyerere to Ruaha

    Meals
    Full Board

After breakfast you transfer to the airstrip for the scheduled flight from Nyerere to Ruaha. This flight is what makes the trip work: it replaces a long, hard overland journey with an hour or two in the air.

In Ruaha you are met and driven to Ruaha River Lodge, the park's first lodge, on the Great Ruaha River, often with wildlife on the way. Ruaha feels different straight away: drier, broader and more dramatic, with baobabs, rocky hills and seasonal rivers.

After lunch you head out on an afternoon game drive. Ruaha is known for its big elephant herds, large lion prides, buffalo, giraffe, greater and lesser kudu and rich birdlife, in a park with far fewer vehicles than the north.

Dinner is at the lodge, with the river below your banda. The mood here is remote, quiet and powerful.

  5. Day 5

    A full day in Ruaha

    Meals
    Full Board

Today is all Ruaha. Your guide recommends the plan for the season and the wildlife: an early start with a packed breakfast or lunch, or a split day with a rest at the lodge.

Ruaha is one of Tanzania's finest wilderness parks, especially for travellers who want space. Its landscapes run from baobab woodland and open plains to the river and rocky country, which makes for superb photography.

Possible sightings include elephant, giraffe, zebra, impala, greater kudu, buffalo, lion, leopard, hyena and wild dog, and the park has more than 570 bird species. Even the quiet moments feel big here, because the landscape is so strong.

Back at Ruaha River Lodge for dinner, it is easy to see why safari purists love the south.

  6. Day 6

    Second day in Ruaha

    Meals
    Full Board

Your second full day in Ruaha gives the trip depth. One day introduces the park; two give your guide time to follow fresh tracks, return to a productive area or explore a different part of it.

The day can centre on photography, big cats, elephants, birds or simply the scenery. It should feel flexible and personal, not rushed.

A guided walk along the river, a bush breakfast or a private vehicle can be added at extra cost where the lodge and park rules allow. We confirm any extra activity, and its price, before the final quote.

Enjoy your last dinner in Ruaha, a good moment to reflect on how different the Southern Circuit feels from Tanzania's famous northern routes.

  7. Day 7

    Ruaha to Dar es Salaam

    Where
    Dar es Salaam
    Stay
    No accommodation
    Meals
    Breakfast

After breakfast you transfer to the airstrip for your scheduled flight back to Dar es Salaam. There may be time for a little game viewing on the way, but the flight schedule sets the morning, so we won't promise it.

In Dar es Salaam you can connect to your international flight, check into a city hotel, or continue to Zanzibar, Mafia Island or another beach. A beach finish works especially well after Ruaha.

That is the end of your 7-Day Nyerere and Ruaha Fly-In Safari with Warriors of Africa Safari.

Where you’ll sleep

  1. Rufiji River Camp

Classic tented camp · Rufiji River, Nyerere National Park · Nights 1–3

One of the first camps in the park, on a bank of the Rufiji River: eleven tents under thatch with terraces facing the water, three family suites with plunge pools, a pool, and a restaurant and bar over the river.

Game drives, boat safaris, guided walks and fly camping all start from camp, which is why it suits a trip built around both land and water.

  2. Ruaha River Lodge

Riverside stone-banda lodge · Great Ruaha River, Ruaha National Park · Nights 4–6

Ruaha's first lodge, opened in 1982, with 24 stone bandas on the Great Ruaha River. Each has a private deck that steps down to a seat on the riverbank, and elephants walk through camp.

Both camps are run by Foxes Safari Camps, whose Safari Air Link flies the route. Accommodation is confirmed against availability, flight times, season and budget before the final quote.

Useful tips

Pack soft and light
Light aircraft carry soft-sided bags only, within a strict weight limit. We confirm the exact allowance with your flights.
The flights set the timings
Scheduled flights between Dar es Salaam, Nyerere and Ruaha run at set times, sometimes with stops. Arrival and departure activities follow the schedule.
Dress for heat and tsetse
The south is hot, especially from September. Neutral, breathable layers help, and avoid dark blue and black, which attract tsetse flies in the woodland.
Bring binoculars
Ruaha's sightings can be far across the plains, and both parks are superb for birds. Binoculars for everyone make a real difference.
Leave a buffer at the end
Domestic flight schedules can change. Avoid a tight international connection on Day 7; a night in Dar es Salaam is the safe buffer.
Tips aren't included
Gratuities for guides, boat crews and lodge staff aren't part of the price, so set a little aside for them.
Bring insurance details
Travel insurance isn't included. Keep your policy details with you, printed and on your phone.
Ask your doctor about malaria
Discuss malaria prevention with your doctor before you travel, and bring insect repellent for the evenings by the rivers.

When to go

June to October is the strongest window. The dry season concentrates wildlife near water in both parks, and game viewing is easiest to understand on a first visit.

November to March is greener and quieter, with excellent birding. It suits flexible travellers and photographers once camp operations are confirmed.

April and May are the wettest months, when access, camp openings and flights can be affected.

Questions guests ask

Is this a fly-in safari?

Yes. Scheduled light aircraft connect Dar es Salaam, Nyerere and Ruaha, then fly you back to Dar es Salaam.

Why combine Nyerere and Ruaha?

Nyerere gives you the river wilderness, with game drives and boat safaris on the Rufiji. Ruaha adds remote big-game country, baobabs and a deeper wilderness feeling. Together they make the strongest short Southern Circuit safari.

Is this better than a drive-in Southern Circuit safari?

It is more comfortable and saves time, but it costs more. A drive-in trip suits lower budgets; this fly-in version suits travellers who want more time in the parks.

Can we add a boat safari in Nyerere?

Yes. Rufiji River Camp runs boat safaris on the river, and we plan one into your Nyerere days and confirm it on the quote.

Are game drives private?

That depends on the lodge. Fly-in safaris usually use the lodge's shared activities unless you book a private vehicle, which we quote separately. At Jabali Ridge a private vehicle is included.

What luggage limit applies?

Light aircraft take soft-sided bags only, within a strict weight limit. We confirm the exact allowance with the airline for your flights.

Can this safari end in Zanzibar?

Yes. Instead of finishing in Dar es Salaam, the trip can continue to Zanzibar or another beach. We quote the extension separately.

Is Ruaha good for first-time safari travellers?

Yes, especially if you like remote wilderness. If you mainly want Tanzania's most famous sights, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro may still come first.

What wildlife can I see?

Possible sightings include elephant, giraffe, buffalo, antelope, hippo, crocodile, lion, leopard, hyena, wild dog and many bird species. Sightings are natural and cannot be guaranteed.
