Why we use this property
Rubondo Island Camp, run by Asilia Africa, is the base of our 5-Day Rubondo Island Lake Victoria Safari and the only tourist camp in Rubondo Island National Park. Eight cottages, one of them a family unit, stand on the edge of the forest above a beach on Lake Victoria, built with traditional methods and local materials, each with an en-suite bathroom with hot water and a private veranda. There is a swimming pool and hammocks for the afternoons, and after sunset hippos come out of the lake to graze around camp. Activities include forest walks, boat safaris along the shoreline, birding, catch-and-release fishing, swamp excursions and game drives, and a chimpanzee habituation trek when conditions allow, which needs a separate park permit and has a minimum age of 12. The camp opens from June to March and closes in April and May; transfers to and from the island airstrip are part of its rates.
