Why we use this property
Greystoke Mahale is the luxury option on our 5-Day Mahale Mountains Chimpanzee Safari, run by Nomad Tanzania on a white beach on Lake Tanganyika with the forested Mahale Mountains directly behind. It is small and unusual: seven open-fronted double bandas, A-frames built from reclaimed dhows collected along the lakeshore, each with an en-suite shower and a view over the beach and the water. The main mess has a top deck for sundowners, and there is a beach bar and a chill-out deck looking across the lake towards the Congo. Nomad’s chimpanzee guides are among the most experienced in the country, and beyond the chimps the forest holds eight other primate species. Days also take in dhow trips, glass-bottom kayaks, forest walks and swimming, and visits to Katumbi village, where Nomad supports the school and clinic. The lodge opens from June to mid-March and quotes at the top of the range, which is why it is our upgrade rather than the base price.
