8-Day Katavi and Mahale Luxury Safari
Katavi's wild plains, then chimpanzees and the beach on Lake Tanganyika: Tanzania at its rarest
Overview
This is the package I would sell to travellers who say, 'We have already seen the classic safari. Show us something rare.' Katavi gives the wild safari feeling, and Mahale gives the lake, forest and chimpanzees.
This 8-Day Katavi and Mahale Luxury Safari is a rare Western Tanzania journey: remote big-game wilderness first, then chimpanzee trekking on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. It starts with three nights in Katavi, one of the least-visited parks in the country, and finishes with four in Mahale, with forest walks, lake scenery, a white beach and the chimpanzees.
Katavi was a game reserve before it became a national park in 1974, and it still feels like the old Africa: wide plains, hippo pools and buffalo herds with almost no other vehicles. Mahale is another world, where emerald forest and granite peaks rise straight out of Lake Tanganyika.
It is a specialist trip for travellers who have already seen the classic safari and want something rare. Western Tanzania needs careful planning: flight routing, remote lodges, trekking permits, boat transfers and buffers, which we take care of.
The price starts at $8,500 per person sharing, based on Mbali Mbali Katavi and Mbali Mbali Mahale, sister lodges that make the handover between parks simple, with scheduled flights and full board. The luxury version at Chada Katavi and Greystoke Mahale starts from about $10,625. We confirm flights, lodge space, permits and park fees before we quote.

- Four light-aircraft flights and a dhow transfer at each end in Mahale.
- Days 3 and 7 can be as gentle as you like.

Day by day
Day 1
Dar es Salaam or Arusha to Katavi
Your Western Tanzania safari begins with a light-aircraft flight from Dar es Salaam or Arusha, whichever routing works best for your dates. Flights to the west run on set days, so the whole itinerary is built around the confirmed schedule. Pack in soft-sided bags, within the aircraft's luggage limit.
The camp team meets you at the airstrip and drives you to Mbali Mbali Katavi, in the centre of the park, looking over the Katisunga Plains. After lunch and time to settle in, there may be an afternoon game drive if the flight lands early enough.
Katavi feels different straight away: wide, quiet and wild, with a real sense of isolation. The first day is about slowing down and accepting that Western Tanzania is not a checklist safari.
Dinner is served at the lodge, with the plain in front of you and the night sounds of one of Tanzania's least-visited parks.
Day 2
A full day in Katavi
After breakfast you set out on your first full day in Katavi. Your guide plans it around where the game is moving, the tracks, the weather and what you most want to see.
Katavi is a remote wilderness, not a sighting machine. Its draw is space, silence and the feeling of being far from Tanzania's safari traffic. Depending on the season you may find elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, antelope, hippo, crocodile, lion, leopard, hyena and a wealth of birds.
The day can be a full game drive with a picnic lunch, or a morning and afternoon drive with a rest at the lodge in between. Katavi rewards travellers who are patient and curious.
You return to Mbali Mbali Katavi for sundowners at the fire pit and dinner on the deck.
Day 3
Second day in Katavi
A second full day matters in a park this remote. Your guide may explore a different area, return to a productive one, or focus on photography, predators, elephants, birds or landscape.
In the dry season the game concentrates on the Katuma River and its last pools, with hippos crowding the water and buffalo herds coming down to drink. Greener months bring softer scenery and excellent birding.
A guided walk can be added where the lodge and park rules allow, at extra cost. Walking rules and fees change, so we confirm them before the final quote.
Your last night in Katavi is unhurried, with the whole of the plain to yourselves before you fly on to the lake.
Day 4
Katavi to Mahale and Lake Tanganyika
After breakfast you transfer to the airstrip for the short flight west to Mahale. This is the key logistical day of the trip, and we plan it carefully around the aircraft, the boat and the lodge.
From the Mahale airstrip you continue by dhow along the shore to Mbali Mbali Mahale, about an hour and a half on the water. The change is dramatic: Katavi's open plains give way to Lake Tanganyika, forested mountains, clear water and a white beach.
Mahale is far more than a chimpanzee park. It is a lake, forest and mountain world, which is exactly why it feels so different from any savannah safari.
The afternoon is for settling in: a walk on the beach, a swim where it is safe, and a briefing for tomorrow's trek, then dinner on the deck over the lake.
Day 5
Chimpanzee trekking in Mahale
Today is for the chimpanzees. After breakfast and a briefing you walk into the forest with the park's guides and trackers, following the current rules.
A trek is nothing like a game drive. You are on foot, moving through the forest, listening, waiting and following signs. Some treks are short, others climb for hours; it all depends on where the chimpanzees are.
Encounters are regulated: small groups, masks, a set distance and a strict time limit with the chimpanzees, to protect them from human illness and keep everyone safe. Permits and fees are confirmed before you travel.
Afterwards you return to the lodge for lunch and a slow afternoon by Lake Tanganyika: swimming, a kayak, a dhow trip or simply the beach.
Day 6
A second trek, or the forest and the lake
Your second full day in Mahale gives room. If yesterday's trek was hard going or the sighting brief, this is another chance at the chimpanzees, subject to permits, rules and the lodge's arrangements. If it was excellent, the day can balance forest, lake and rest.
Mahale's strength is the mix of primates, mountains and Lake Tanganyika. You can trek in the forest in the morning and lie by one of Africa's great lakes in the afternoon.
Kayaking, snorkelling, catch-and-release fishing where permitted, dhow trips, forest walks and village visits are all possible, depending on the lodge, the lake and the season.
The evening ends with a fire on the sand and the light fading over the water towards the Congo.
Day 7
A slow day on Lake Tanganyika
Your last full day follows your energy. Some guests want one more forest activity; others prefer a quiet lake day after the intensity of Katavi and the treks.
A luxury trip in the far west should not feel like constant movement. Mahale lets you slow down without ever feeling bored: the lake, the beach, the mountains and the forest make a natural retreat.
It is a good day for photography, a private dinner, time on the water or simply the view. For couples and honeymooners it becomes the soft, romantic chapter of the trip.
Enjoy a final dinner at Mbali Mbali Mahale, with the forest behind you and Lake Tanganyika in front.
Day 8
Mahale to Dar es Salaam or Arusha
After breakfast you leave the lodge by dhow for the airstrip and fly back towards Dar es Salaam or Arusha, depending on the routing for your dates.
Western Tanzania flight logistics can shift, so avoid a tight same-day international connection unless the confirmed schedule leaves a safe buffer. A night in Dar es Salaam or Arusha is easy to add.
That is the end of your 8-Day Katavi and Mahale Luxury Safari with Warriors of Africa Safari. From here you can fly home or finish on Zanzibar or Mafia Island.

Eight tented rooms on raised platforms under thatch in the centre of the park, looking over the Katisunga Plains, with a two-tier main area, a deck and a fire pit facing the plain.
It is the sister of Mbali Mbali Mahale, which keeps the flight and transfer between the two parks simple.

Prefer a different camp?
The route stays the same; the camps, the price and the feel change. Chada Katavi and Greystoke Mahale, both run by Nomad, make the luxury version, from about $10,625; Katavi Wildlife Camp is the alternative in Katavi. The brief's Kungwe Beach Lodge is Mbali Mbali Mahale under its former name.

Useful tips
- Pack soft and light
- Light aircraft carry soft-sided bags only, within a strict weight limit. We confirm the exact allowance with your flights.
- The flights set the dates
- Scheduled flights to Katavi and Mahale run on set days of the week, so the trip follows the schedule. Charters fly any day, at a price.
- Bring trekking shoes
- Mahale's trails are steep, rooty and sometimes slippery. Broken-in shoes with good grip, long trousers and a light rain layer make the treks far easier.
- Chimpanzee rules come first
- Masks, distance and a time limit protect the chimpanzees from human illness. If you feel unwell on a trekking day, tell your guide; you may not be able to trek.
- Leave a buffer at the end
- Western Tanzania schedules can change. Avoid a tight international connection on Day 8; a night in Dar es Salaam or Arusha is the safe buffer.
- Tips aren't included
- Gratuities for guides, trackers, boat crews and lodge staff aren't part of the price, so set a little aside for them.
- Bring insurance details
- Travel insurance isn't included. Keep your policy details with you, printed and on your phone.
- Ask your doctor about malaria
- Discuss malaria prevention with your doctor before you travel. Tsetse flies are common in Katavi's woodland, so pack repellent and avoid dark blue and black clothing.

When to go
June to October is the strongest window. Katavi's dry season concentrates wildlife on the river and the last pools, and Mahale's forest trails are at their driest.
November to February is greener and quieter, with good birding, but Katavi's camps begin closing from November; we confirm what is operating first.
March to May is the wet season, when access is difficult and most Western Tanzania camps are closed.
Questions guests ask
Is this a luxury safari?
Yes. Remote flights, few camps, specialist guiding and chimpanzee trekking make it a premium Western Tanzania trip. The starting price is based on the two Mbali Mbali lodges; Chada Katavi and Greystoke Mahale are the luxury upgrade.
Can first-time safari travellers book this?
Yes, if you want remote wilderness. First-time visitors who mainly want Tanzania's famous sights may prefer the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire first.
Why is Western Tanzania more expensive?
It is remote, with few lodges, few flights, lake transfers and specialist activities such as chimpanzee trekking, which all cost more to run than a drive-in safari.
Are chimpanzee sightings guaranteed?
No. Chimpanzees are wild, and sightings depend on their movements, the weather, the forest and the trekking rules. Two trekking days improve your chances, but nothing is guaranteed.
How many chimpanzee treks are included?
The plan allows two trekking days in Mahale, subject to permits, park rules and the lodge's arrangements. A further trek can be quoted separately.
Is Katavi worth visiting?
Yes, if you want remote wilderness, few vehicles and a serious safari atmosphere. It is not the place for a busy, famous route with many lodge options.
Can this package end in Zanzibar?
Yes. Zanzibar, Mafia Island or another beach can follow Mahale; we quote the extension separately because routing and beach hotels vary.
What luggage should I bring?
Soft-sided bags only, packed light. Light aircraft have strict luggage limits, which we confirm with the airline for your flights.
Are activities private or shared?
That depends on the lodge. Most remote camps run scheduled shared activities unless a private vehicle or guide is booked.
